Merry Holidays!

by on Dec.23, 2011, under Photos, Wolfblog

Hey folks…

Wishing you all a great holiday! Thanks to all those who have sent personal notes on Facebook & Twitter and to my email account! Your kind words are much appreciated! THANK YOU!

This set of photos encompasses my last seven days. On Friday I flew to Germany to play a Christmas concert for German TV called “Weinachten mit dem Bundespräsidenten”. This happened in the very church where Martin Luther started the Protestant Reformation with his 95 Theses. Pretty cool. It was a wonderful trip and once again fun to play with DG on the classical guitar! This show airs in Germany on Christmas Eve on ZDF.

(This week German TV I’m on a few Christmas shows backing up DG. Today I was sent a pic of me singing “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” with Jan Fedder for his Christmas special. It’s included in these photos…. Fun time!)

Fast forward 24hrs after the German concert, I was back in NYC and completely consumed with preparation and recording again for my next MW cd. So get ready folks… More music to come! My good friend and songwriter Matthew Kelley and I have collaborated on this next cd. I’m recording all his songs for this one! The songs have become OURS and it has been a great communal effort… Songs of positive energy and light!

The same great team from the MIRROR cd is with me again. Adrian Harpham on drums, Jonathan Maron on bass and Phil Nicolo recording and mixing.

I’m really looking forward to this project so stay tuned!

Have a great Holiday Season folks and I will see you all on the road!!

Big Love

Marcus

Mirror Lyrics

by on Feb.23, 2011, under Lyrics, Mirror Lyrics

Smile Where You Stand (Top)

Stand outside with my hands in the air
Waiting for the sky to fall
Clouds roll in but they roll away
But I know I couldn’t seen them all

Buzzing sound is alive in the air
But it fades in and out
I’m waiting for the message you sent
I can see that you figured me out

Well it’s a long way to go
And full of surprises
But you want your money back guaranteed

But you know
As well as I do
That there ain’t no love with guarantees

Lay on the ground
It’s a sunny day
With possibilities abound
but they’re trapped inside your dreams, you stir
I think you’re gonna wake up
You rub your eyes and you look around
And you see the stones on the ground
That you picked up, on the day
You walked out of there

Well its a long way to go
And full of surprises
But you want your
Money back guaranteed

But you know
As well as I do
That there ain’t no love with guarantees

It’s a fine day to die
It’s a fine day to make a new plan
It’s a fine day to try
To smile where you stand
Smile where you stand
Smile where you stand
Don’t cry, don’t cry

Signs (Top)

Time to turn my head around
The truth will always
Get in the way of
Love imagined

Soon will die
The sun will come
And burn your eyes out

Show me the signs that I should see
The signs that are staring back at me
They’re clear today
But I choose to look away

I call them you special charms
You wave your flags and
I’m marching in to
Your lights are blinding me
From signs that I should
See so clearly

Show me the signs that I should see
The signs that are staring back at me
They’re clear today
But I choose to look away

Time reveals the things we hide
From ourselves though their
Clear as daylight
Comes tomorrow we will find
The truth written on the signs so

Show me the signs that I should see
The signs that are staring back at me
They’re clear today
But I choose to look away

Pretend (Top)

String me out and reel me in
Dry me out and tuck me in tonight
Nothing I would rather do
Than gently wake up to you for life

But all that’s in my bed tonight is empty space
You dance without your chains tonight
And a brand new face

We don’t have to pretend tonight
Been through hell and back
Too tired to fight
Dark and tired we smashed the lights
We don’t have to pretend tonight
We don’t have to pretend tonight

Hold me close and push away
Sleep with me and lie awake
But be here

What’s wrong with you is wrong with me
But you be you and I’ll be me in love

It’s all been said and done before
There’s nothing new
But after all the bullshit
It’s me and you

We don’t have to pretend tonight
Been through hell and back
Too tired to fight
Dark and tired we smashed the lights
We don’t have to pretend tonight
We don’t have to pretend tonight
Come along with me
It’s time that frees
Close your eyes
Step outside

String me out and reel me in
Dry me out and tuck me in tonight

Seconds (Top)

It’s the seconds in life that matter
The years and the days are just ladders
Will we rise or fall
It’s all a judgment call
Seconds will last your life

They say there’s nothing new under the sun
Everything you think it’s been done
If what they say is true
Can you say that I love you
And deal with the things that are truth

If you drink will you drive or take a cab
If you’re angry will you fight or go home mad
Throw caution to the wind
Close your eyes and keep it in
It’s the seconds in life that matter most

Men in jail they understand
And many a rich man had no plan
When push comes to shove
Remember who you love
Close your eyes and take a deep breath

Cause sometimes there won’t be another day
To take back all the things that you say
Give life to those who die
Untangle all your lies
And clean up the mess that you made

It’s the seconds in life that matter
The years and the days are just ladders
Will we rise or fall
It’s all a judgment call
It’s the seconds in life that matter most

If you’re wrong will you lie or take the fall
With seconds to judge the call
Throw caution to the wind
Close your eyes and keep it in
It’s the seconds in life that matter most
The seconds in life that matter most
It’s the seconds in life that matter most

Give Back To You (Top)

I don’t know why
You pass me by
I paid my dues with the best of them
I’ve struggled like the rest of them

I’m still, still trying
To find my way in this life
And I’ll take what I need
Till I can stand on my own
Till I can give
Give back to you

I’ve lost some friends
I’ve burned bridges again and again
My anger shows the worst of me
Covers the best of me

But I’m still, still trying
To find my truth in this life
I may take what I need
But in my heart is no greed
And I will give
Give back to you

I don’t know why
You pass me by
I pay my dues like the rest of them
I struggle with the best of them

I’m still, still trying
To find my purpose in this life
I will take what I need
Till my soul is free
And I will give
Give it all back to you
I will give
Give back to you

Mirror (Top)

There’s a space for me
In the corner of your heart
I’m the small box buried
In your bedroom closet
Tonight you’re calling
Cause there’s something that’s missing
It’s the voice you wish to hear
It’s the voice that’s singing

You never let yourself know me
You never got to truly meet yourself
Through the mirror my love
I’ll never get to truly show you
Beneath the surface of my skin
Beyond the mirror of my love

The door was wide open
You chose not to enter

There’s a space for you in the corner of my heart
As I sing wide open
Each night I give it a shot
Tonight you’re calling
But I’m not home
The voice you wish to hear
Is once again on his own

You never let yourself know me
You never got to truly meet yourself
Through the mirror of our love
I’ll never get to truly show you
Beneath the surface of my skin
Beyond the mirror of my love

The mirror of the union
Has vanished once again
The door was wide open
You chose not to enter

All There Is To Say (Top)

All in all it’s all the same
The love you give
The love you take away
It’s not good enough to be alive
You’re never really satisfied without love

So don’t ask me no more questions about what I really mean
To me the words I said to you are clear
And I wouldn’t want it any other way
Sometimes goodbye is all there is to say

Fights can bring awakening
Were we ever really listening to what we said
Every day we were breaking down
The time has come it’s time to walk away

So don’t ask me no more questions about what I really mean
To me the words I said to you are clear
And I wouldn’t want it any other way
Sometimes goodbye is all there is to say

Never want to change
Now is yesterday
Time thought away
Now never came

And I wouldn’t want it any other way
Sometimes goodbye is all there is to say
And I wouldn’t want it any other way
Sometimes goodbye is all there is to say
And I wouldn’t want it any other way
Sometimes goodbye is all there is to say

For All (Top)

Lay with me
I feel complete
Hold you close
And fall Asleep

All we’ve built
It’s incomplete
If we die tonight
We’ll go in peace

If lightning strikes us down tonight
We won’t give up without a fight
But if it’s meant to me
And Heaven Calls
And wants to set
Out bodes free
Our love should fill the world
For All

Sing for you
You sing for me
Breathe for you
You breathed for me

Ran away
You pulled me in
Stayed with you
Until the end

If lightning strikes us down tonight
We won’t give up without a fight
But if it’s meant to me
And Heaven Calls
And wants to set
Out bodes free
Our love should fill the world
Our love should fill the world
For all

How we gonna breathe?
Will we believe?
I don’t wanna leave
I always thought there was time
I always thought there was time

If lightning strikes us down tonight
We won’t give up without a fight
But if it’s meant to me
And Heaven calls
And wants to set
Out bodes free
And if you leave with me
And the end becomes
A spectacle for all to see
And time will cease
When heaven calls
And wants to set our bodies free
Our love can fill the world
Our love can fill the world
For All

Higher (Top)

I am lowly
So unholy
I have fallen from all I’ve known
I have broken my heart open
I have melted into the living ocean

Will your grace reach down and take my hand?
Plunge beyond the knowledge of worldly quicksand
Beyond your reluctance I understand
And I will take you
Higher
I will take you higher
I will take you higher
I will take you higher

Low is my trust in all beliefs
The rock of faith crumbles beneath my feet
I am weaker
Yet I am free
A drop of ocean
Immersed in the living sea

Will your grace reach down and take my hand?
Plunge beyond the knowledge of worldly quicksand
Beyond our reluctance I understand
And I will take you
Higher
I will take you higher
I will take you higher
I will take you higher

Where It Takes Us (Top)

I don’t want you along for the ride
I want you to drive by yourself
Don’t pass me by

I don’t want you to feel bad for me
Act for yourself
Have trust
What’ll be will be

We’ve seen it before it’s a wide open place
We’ve filled it all up
Wide open spaces
Let’s walk together
We’ll stumble at times
But stand on your own
We’ll see
Where it takes us

It’s a waste of time feeling sad
You can’t go back
To times you’ve never had

Move forward is all you can do
Close your eyes and jump
It’ll see you through

We’ve seen it before it’s a wide open place
We’ve filled it all up
Wide open spaces
Let’s walk together
We’ll stumble at times
But stand on your own
We’ll see
Where it takes us

It’s a long way back
It’s a one way track
Going home

Who’d have known that we’d find ourselves here
Two steps forward
All that’s left is fear

We’ve seen it before it’s a wide open place
We’ve filled it all up
Wide open spaces
Let’s walk together
We’ll stumble at times
But stand on your own
We’ll see
Where it takes us

Island Time (Top)

In the shade of traffic lights
Yellow to Red
I really should be sleeping but you’re alive in my head

So many memories
But so much more to go
Time it won’t move fast enough the days go so slow

On an island in time
Not a cloud passes by
But I know we can’t stay
So promise we won’t waste a day

Spending all our time
In boxes that we make
It’s time to build some windows and open up the gates

Wasting all our days
Hiding from the world
I think the world can handle another boy loves who loves a girl

On an island in time
Not a cloud passes by
But I know we can’t stay
So promise we won’t waste a day

On an island in time
Not a cloud passes by
But I know we can’t stay
So promise we won’t waste a day
So promise we won’t waste a day
So promise we won’t waste a day

Better Than You (Top)

I played the game and I played it right
Now I’m rich as hell as I’m set for life
I’ve got a big ass house and this wife is hot
I’ve got a Hamptons house and great big yacht

Because I’m better than you
I’m better than you
Because I’m better than you
I’m better than you

Some people say it’s love that counts
I’ve got all the love I need in my bank account
They say the best things in life is free
Whoever said that never hung with me

Because I’m better than you
I’m better than you
Because I’m better than you
I’m better than you

Money’s all that matters
Money’s all that matters
Money’s all that matters to me

Love will only shatter
Keep your mind in tatters
Love will only shatter your dreams

Because I’m better than you
I’m better than you
Because I’m better than you
I’m better than you

“Mirror” – the making of

by on Sep.03, 2010, under Wolfblog

The new Marcus Wolf album called “Mirror” is set to be digitally released on 10.10.10. I started recording in March 2010 during a few days off of the David Garrett tour. We had two rehearsals and recorded 12 songs in two LONG days…. The rhythm section features Adrian Harpham on drums and Jon Maron on bass. Both players had been playing with me for years with other projects and a few MW shows so they knew where I was coming from and we put together 12 songs very quickly. We tracked basics with Phil Nicolo engineering in Conshohocken PA at Studio 4.

The drums and bass were set up in the studio and I was in the control room singing and playing…

guitar amps in the lounge… We recorded  to 2″ Studer tape machine thru a fat vintage Neve. It was so nice to hear music off of tape again! No new technology has surpassed the warmth and depth of tape…

All overdubs were done at o1studio, my own production office where I recorded any guitar and vocal overubs. I had some great friends help out as well! The beautiful Ann Marie Milazzo sang on 3 songs. Cello and Piano virtuoso Dave Eggar helped arrange the strings and piano for the title track “Mirror”. He also played a beautiful solo cello on “Island Time”. Keyboardist Ben Stivers filled in a few holes on two tunes, playing all the right notes in the right places as usual!

David Garrett Marshalls & Stradivarius

Decca Records artist David Garrett was kind enough to support the idea of this project from the start and lent his talent on a track that we’ve been playing on his tours for the past year. “Little WIng” by Jimi Hendrix features David and it’s the first recording of him using his recently acquired Stradivarius. David’s part was overdubbed at Electric Lady Studios at the end of the day when I was recording guitars for David’s “Rock Symphonies” album. It was pretty cool to be hearing David with this violin built in 1717 playing a classic Hendrix tune in the studio that Jimi built!

Little Wing will only be available with the physical CD purchase and is being sold at the merchandise tables on David’s upcoming German tour. When I return from the fall tour the physical CD will be available from Amazon in December.

I went back to Conshohocken for the final mixes with Phil Nicolo engineering. His mix room has Pro Tools HD and a vintage E series SSL console. We used all outboard gear and console eq/compression for the mix. No plugins really needed, thank you! We printed to a half inch tape machine. Once again I love that tape sound! All the recent audio technology has not made things sound better as far as I’m concerned… Though the fact that recording can be done practically anywhere these days proves the convenience factor can’t be ignored! The art of engineering is still the key to a pro sounding record and I was so grateful to have the chance to work with a master industry veteran like Phil.

Marcus & Phil in Studio 4 mix room, Conshohocken PA

Many of the songs chosen were written by my good friend and music cohort Michael Katz of my side project M2B. We had made demos of Mike’s favorite songs and I always wanted to take some of the tracks I fell in love with and make proper versions of them. One of the tunes “For All” was written in response to the untimely death of Mike’s Rabbi who passed away with his wife in a tragic fire and is dedicated to Jacob & Debbie Rubenstein.

The album is dedicated to my Mom & Dad. Dad passed away while I was on tour with David in Ocober 2009.

Mirror photo shoot with Kim Kennedy

My good friend Kim Kennedy took the photos for the record. He worked on a few projects that I produced in the last few years. He is a well know fashion photographer based in Boston and New York. Kim has been recently dealing with some tough times…. Lymphatic cancer. He has a passionate love for life and hunger to celebrate  life’s joy with everyone he connects with. A vibrant soul, this brother is a light on the planet and an inspiration to all who get to know him. If you are in a position to help please check out this website http://www.everybodysbrother.com and help out! Kim’s situtation is curable.
